Final Countdown to Summer – kind of

Today is the official first day of summer and our countdown to our final 5 (school) days of the current school year.

For some, summer began when you recently tracked out. For many, you are probably looking forward to the short but sweet upcoming 1-week break.

As we wind down the current school year,  we’d like to remind our Salem Community that we are still in need of volunteers for the next school year.

We understand that many of us are not ready to start thinking about the school days ahead and would rather enjoy the present moment basking in the summer sun, hanging out by the pool, sleeping in, and catching fireflies by night.

We are excited about that too! But we are also a bit concerned.

Our PTA helps enrich our student’s lives by hosting activities that help fund important purchases (like the new Chromebooks!), our annual Book Fair, monthly Spirit Nights, Spirit Wear Store, and more to avoid the need for our kids to sell things like wrapping paper, merchandise, or candy.

Year round school calendars create a big gap over the summer months that we need to fill in at the end of this term to enable all tracks to benefit from PTA organized activities and fundraising events throughout the school year.

Currently, we do not have enough volunteers to maintain our PTA for 2019/2020 and could really use your help.

We are looking for motivated volunteers with fresh ideas to work collaboratively across all SMS PTA committees to help enrich the lives of our Salem Middle students. We understand broad volunteer requests can be overwhelming and ineffective. That’s why this upcoming school year, we’re doing things a little different.

Rather than ask a few individuals to participate tirelessly all year long, we restructured our entire PTA roster to enable anyone and everyone to participate at a time and frequency that is most convenient for them.

To help take the pressure off our busy families, we’ve broken the recurring volunteer spots into track subsets to enable more flexibility. Officer Seats and Chairperson Roles do require a specific level of commitment and availability all year. However, there is a great deal of flexibility during breaks and tracks and as needed. Many of these positions can be performed remotely most of the time.

Most of our SMS PTA Volunteer needs only require families to commit to just two hours. If you’re wondering how you can possibly make a difference in two hours, just leave that part to us.

There are some parents who have the bandwidth and interest to spend many hours volunteering, and we’re grateful for those who can do that!

Our new 2 Hour Power Volunteer Pledge Program emphasizes that any and all help make a huge difference for schools, and throughout the year we’ll have lots of ways to pitch in for short spurts.

We’re happy to help you get involved in any way that works for your schedule and interests.

What would you like to do? When would you like to do it? We’ll gladly work with you to find a way that you can help—involvement is for everyone.

We’d value your two hours, and we promise that there’s no obligation beyond that commitment. If you’d like to do more, that’s wonderful! But it won’t be expected of you unless you fill an Officer or Chairperson role. For more information on those opportunities, see below.

Participating in our 2 Hour Power Pledge Program is easy. Simply fill out the Pledge Form and Interest Survey.  Then we’ll be in touch with opportunities that fit your interests and availability.

Here is a list of our current volunteer needs, as well as open Chairperson and Elected Officer seats.

Current Openings for 2019-2020

Our 2018/2019 Board Members, Volunteer, and Chairperson predecessors have provided detailed instructions, checklists, and pertinent information to ensure our next school year is a successful one!

Please feel free to call or email our Nomination Committee if you have any questions or concerns.

Together, we can make a huge difference at SMS!

Thanks in advance!
